Based in NZ and established in 1994, our business was founded after we; Greg and Ali Lang, gained hands-on training in the traditional wheelwrighting and carriage building trade in England during the early 1990s. Over the course of many projects and years, we have become expert wheelwrights and carriage builders. Formerly known as The Wheelwright Shop, we have redefined our passion for traditional wheelwrighting and carriage building to serve history better, by focussing on the future. The Wheelwright Hub; intent on growing a community to carry forward time-honoured skills and techniques that are now rare anywhere in the world.
The ancient craft of wheelwrighting, once vital to transportation and industry, is at risk of fading into obscurity. Did you know that The Wheelwright Hub is the only operating Wheelwright in New Zealand? As seasoned craftsmen retire without successors, this essential skill, critical to the creation and maintenance of durable carriage wheels, risks disappearing entirely. The loss of this craft not only erases a key piece of our industrial heritage but also deprives us of the expertise needed for preserving historical vehicles and continuing quality craftsmanship. If we don't act to teach and inspire the next generation, we risk losing a vital part of our cultural and practical legacy forever.
The craft of wheelwrighting is rare, and we're determined to keep it alive. The Wheelwright Hub Academy is coming, bringing structured education, hands-on training, and apprenticeship pathways in traditional wheelwrighting and carriage building. Backed by The Wheelwright Heritage Trust, this will be New Zealand's dedicated home for learning a living heritage trade. Find out what's in the works and how you can help make it happen.
